A different kind of `Boxing Day’

Well, there are still quite a few boxes of new milkbags available at Mr McLaren’s. Enough for everyone!

If you would like to try using new milkbags (clean, shiny, smooth 🙂 ), then this is your chance to pick up a box or two.

If you have a weaving group who eats through bags, then pick up as many as you’d like — since there are so many left, there’s no need to restrict yourselves to just 10 boxes!

So please help clean out the trailer this week. And have a great start to the new year!

… and they’ve arrived!

The latest update on the big shipment from Ottawa …

Mr McLaren made it down to Mississauga and back without incident. He estimates there were between 450 and 500 mats in the trailer + truck that went down (see previous blog post).

And in return — his trailer now has boxes of new milkbags available for pick-up (see this map for directions):

[The trailer] is parked with the back end toward the front of my driveway.  The back door is a ramp. Open the handles on the side and pull on the door and it swings downward easily. (It’s spring loaded so it’s not at all heavy).

Please pick up your boxes (a suggested max. of 10) between Tuesday and Thursday (20-22 Dec.).

So many thank-yous for all the volunteers who’ve made this happen: the weavers and crocheters (and the bag collectors before them!), the drivers for various groups’ mats and bags, McMcLaren for taking everything to CFFC — and returning with boxes of new bags — and Angela Kesthely of Milkbags Unlimited, for so generously offering those boxes. Lots of good will and energy and plain hard work (!) have made this all come together. A pleasure to be part of such a wonderful group of people. Thank you.

And Merry Christmas to you all!

And they’re off … !

After various final drop-offs this past week, the trailer and truck filled with mats and bags has left for the CFFC warehouse in Mississauga!

There are probably well over 400 mats and bags in total, with deliveries from Barrhaven, Ottawa South, Orleans, as far away as Renfrew (!) — and many points in between. This has been a tremendous collecting point for us over the past half year and now all our efforts are on the road, heading out to help people in a lot of different places around the world. Thank yous go out to everyone involved!

New milkbags coming!

This is a follow-up to my previous post about the Dec 17 drop-off date at Mr McLaren’s trailer. Angela Kesthely posted a comment to it, saying there were boxes of new milkbags to be had at the CFFC warehouse, available for the return trip to Ottawa. Based on our experience with the 300,000 milkbags that ProSoya offered us in July, the boxes should weigh just under 40 lbs each and be roughly  20″ x 15″ x 10″ in size.

We have now coordinated efforts with CFFC — Mr McLaren will be bringing back 70-80 boxes to Ottawa, probably becoming available on Dec 20 — and we must clear them out of the trailer within a few days! So here’s the plan:

  • Sat 17 Dec: deadline for dropping off mats and bags at Mr McLaren’s
  • Sun 18 Dec: trailer goes down to Mississauga, with a stopover in Lindsay
  • Mon 19 Dec: trailer unloaded at CFFC warehouse; boxed milkbags loaded up for return trip
  • Tues-Thurs, 20-22 Dec: boxed milkbags MUST be picked up at Mr McLaren’s

ALL of this is totally dependent on the weather! So be prepared for adjustments.

Final drop-off for 2016: Dec 17

Hi, everyone. Well, we’re now into December and Mr McLaren will be getting ready to take his trailer down to Mississauga and the CFFC (Canadian Food for Children) warehouse, with a stop-over in Lindsay to drop items off for Anne Downey. He’d like all deliveries made to the trailer by Saturday, 17 December; he will be heading out the next day, 18 Dec., unless the weather’s bad.

Anne Downey has passed along her wish-list of items; these will be added last to the trailer, so they’ll be easy to find and unload. So here’s Anne’s list:

  • baby things: blankets, sleepers, onesies, clothes, sweaters, etc
  • good used towels, flannel sheets; textiles in general
  • warm clothes
  • winter clothes

Please mark all boxes for Anne Downey with `LINDSAY, so they’re easily identified in the trailer load.

Click on this link for a .pdf map of the drop-off-location. Note that there’s a tree that obscures the street sign (when you’re heading east on Heron Rd.). There’s a tally sheet taped to the inside of the trailer door; please take the time to write how many mats/bags you’ve added, as well as noting any boxes for the Lindsay drop-off. At present, there are about 200 mats.

This will be the last time for Mr McLaren’s trailer this winter. We will have to make other arrangements until either it or another location becomes available next spring, so if you can, hold on to your finished mats and bags. Perhaps share the storage load with a few friends. If anyone has space to offer, please leave a message here in the Comments area.

So – 2 more weeks to get things finished! Thanks, everyone, for making this a really successful drop-off location! And thank you especially, Mr McLaren, for having offered it to us this year – it’s been a marvelous space.
